What is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

All you need to know

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (or ACA for short), is the comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010. The ACA was established to help many more people get access to the health coverage they need.

No matter which plan you choose, all our plans offer coverage for the 10 Essential Health Benefits (EHBs) established by the Affordable Care Act (plus more!).

9 out of 10 people qualify for financial assistance¹

There are two types of federal financial assistance available when buying one of our plans.

Premium Tax Credits

This is a tax credit you can take in advance of your monthly health insurance payment (or “premium”) based on your expected income. If you qualify for a premium tax credit, you can use some or all of it to reduce your monthly premium payment when you enroll in a Qualified Health Plan (QHP).²

Cost-Sharing Reductions

If you have a Silver Plan, these can lower the amount you pay out of pocket. The size of your household and income determine how much. These reductions can be combined with a Premium Tax Credit.

²Federal financial assistance can only be applied to the purchase of a Qualified Health Plan (QHP), which is an insurance plan that’s certified by the Health Insurance Marketplace®, provides essential health benefits, follows established limits on cost-sharing (like deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket maximum amounts), and meets other requirements under the Affordable Care Act.
