HPV Self-Collection Test

July 1, 2026

Cervical cancer is highly preventable with early detection, yet inadequate screening continues to result in over 4,000 deaths annually in the U.S. While clinician‑collected HPV/Pap co‑testing remains the most reliable method, some patients face barriers such as stigma or trauma.

To improve screening access, FDA‑cleared HPV self‑collection offers a discreet, patient‑administered alternative that providers may order for use in clinical or other healthcare settings. HRSA guidelines designate high‑risk HPV testing—self‑ or clinician‑collected—as the preferred screening method for average‑risk women ages 30–65.

HPV self‑collection (CPT 87626) has been added to the Medicaid fee schedule and is payable as of December 1, 2025.
