Parts A and B
Original Medicare
Part C
Medicare Advantage
Part D
Prescription Coverage
Part A
Provides hospital coverage and helps pay for inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing, hospice, home health care and some other services.
Part B
Covers and helps pay for doctors’ visits, outpatient hospital visits and other medical services and supplies. Part B usually requires a monthly premium.
Part C
Combines all the services of Parts A and B and can include extra benefits. It’s also known as Medicare Advantage and is offered through private companies such as Jefferson Health Plans. Some Medicare Advantage plans cover prescription drugs (Part D), too.
Part D
Helps pay for prescription drugs. Part D plans are provided through Medicare-approved private insurance companies. You must enroll in a Part D plan to get coverage — it is not automatic.
